The original duo of Tommy Lee Jones Agent Kay and Will Smith Agent Jay from "Man In Black" are now in 1/6th scale for the first time. These 12-inch action figures have long been on my waiting list since the movie first came out in 1997 and somehow it has taken that long to produce and release these figures. If not for the third film MIB3, I doubt that these would even be made. Most companies want to stay current and do not revisit old movies except for the sure, tried and tested ones such as Star Wars, Predators, Terminator and Batman movie franchise. Somehow collectors seem to not get enough of these and 1/6th scale manufacturers just keep churning out figures based on those movies. What about "The Fifth Element"? A 1/6th scale Bruce Willis as Korben Dallas OR Milla Jovovich as Leeloo would be a treat indeed.
"Men in Black" is a 1997 science fiction action comedy film directed by Barry Sonnenfeld, produced by Steven Spielberg, starring Tommy Lee Jones, Will Smith, Linda Fiorentino, Vincent D'Onofrio, Rip Torn and Tony Shalhoub. The film was based on the Men in Black comic book series by Lowell Cunningham, originally published by Aircel Comics. The film featured the creature effects and makeup of Rick Baker. The film was released on July 2, 1997, by Columbia Pictures and grossed $589,390,539 worldwide against a $90 million budget.
I've already done reviews on both Dragon's Agent J (Will Smith) and Agent K (Tommy Lee Jones) in my earlier posts. You can check the Blog Archive (August 2012) for the posts. This particular toy blog post in Toy Haven is just for the two of them ;p They make a fine movie pair, don't they? There's no denying the chemistry between them. Other notable pairings that come to mind - Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson (Zoolander, Starsky and Hutch), Michael J. Fox and Christopher Loyd (Back to the Future), Robert Redford and Paul Newman (Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Sting), just to name a few. Scroll down to see more pictures :)
Agent K is armed with the Ankle Gun / Agent Pistol while Agent J is armed with the Noisy Cricket.
Will Smith stars as James Darrell Edwards III / Agent J: A former NYPD member, newly recruited to the MIB. Smith was cast because Barry Sonnenfeld's wife was a fan of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. Chris O'Donnell turned down the role because he found the role of a new recruit too similar to Dick Grayson, whom he played in Batman Forever and Batman & Robin. Will Smith said he accepted the role after meeting with Spielberg and cited his success as a producer.
Tommy Lee Jones as Agent K / Kevin Brown is Agent J's grizzled and humorless mentor. Clint Eastwood turned down the part, while Jones only accepted the role after Steven Spielberg promised the script would improve, based on his respect for Spielberg's track record. He had been disappointed with the first draft, which he reportedly said "stank"; he felt it did not capture the tone of the comic.
Men in Black won the Academy Award for Best Makeup, and was also nominated for Best Original Score and Best Art Direction. It was also nominated for the Golden Globe of Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy.
Following the film's release, Ray-Ban stated sales of their Predator 2 sunglasses (worn by the organization to deflect neuralyzers) tripled to $5 million.
Zed: You'll dress only in attire specially sanctioned by MiB special services. You'll conform to the identity we give you, eat where we tell you, live where we tell you. From now on you'll have no identifying marks of any kind. You'll not stand out in any way. Your entire image is crafted to leave no lasting memory with anyone you encounter. You're a rumor, recognizable only as deja vu and dismissed just as quickly. You don't exist; you were never even born. Anonymity is your name. Silence your native tongue. You're no longer part of the System. You're above the System. Over it. Beyond it. We're "them." We're "they." We are the Men in Black.
Zed: Kay, give the kid a weapon.
[Kay opens a chest filled with intergalactic guns. He picks up a large rifle]
Kay: A Series Four De-atomizer.
Jay: That's what I'm talkin' about.
Kay: [picks up a very tiny gun and gives it to Jay] Noisy Cricket.
Jay: [stares the weapon in disgust] Hey, Kay, nah, nah. Come on, man, you-you get a Series Four De-atomizer and I-I get a little - little midgy cricket?
Kay: [notices Jay is pointing the gun in his direction] WHOA! kid...
[grabs the arm Jay is holding the weapon with and points it away from him]
Jay: Feel like I'm gonna break this damn thing...!
The Noisy Cricket was a very tiny gun with a lot of power. Despite its small size, it launches a large orb of energy. This palm-sized firearm wields an unbelievable amount of power. The Cricket can level a truck, blast through three feet of concrete, or shatter the exoskeleton of all but the hardiest of extraterrestrials. Few agents ever get the hang of holding the gun properly to minimize its kickback, often resulting in hurling them across the room.
Lest we forget, there's also Frank the Pug. In the first film, Frank the pug appears at a small kiosk next to a man selling keys. Frank acts as an informant for MiB, providing Agent K information on the "galaxy" referred to by the Arquillians. Frank reveals that the galaxy is on Earth.
